France is sending Filippo Meneghetti’s feature debut Two of Us starring Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier into the Oscar race.
The drama, about two retired women who have secretly been lovers for decades, is France's entry for the 2021 Academy Awards in the international feature film category.
Veteran actors Sukowa and Chevallier have drawn raves for their turns as Nina and Madeline, two seniors who have been carrying out a secret romance, disguised as a close friendship, for decades in a small French town before a series of unpredictable events threatens to tear them apart.
Two of Us premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year and snatched up by Magnolia Pictures for U.S. release.
The French Oscar pick is always one to watch for the awards race. France is one of the most successful countries in what is now called the best international feature film category, with 39 nominations and nine wins.
The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 13, 2021. The winners' ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on April 25, 2021.
