What if people everywhere were as well-trained in waging peace as soldiers are in waging war?

This is a question Paul K. Chappell, peace literacy director at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), has often asked since he graduated from West Point in 2002, was deployed to Iraq, and left active duty in November 2009 as a captain.

Peace literacy is a new approach to peace and education that views peace not merely as a goal, but as a skill-set. It is a growing movement of educators and concerned citizens who want to empower people with the training, skills and understanding needed to heal the root causes of societies’ problems, rather than merely addressing surface symptoms.

This summer, NAPF’s Peace Literacy Institute will hold two, multi-day Peace Literacy Workshops that will delve into this question as well as other issues that address humanity’s ability to thrive in the 21st century.

The workshops will be taught via Zoom, broadcast from a newly designed virtual world, and co-facilitated by Chappell and Shari Clough, Oregon State University philosophy professor, and the peace literacy curriculum coordinator.

The first workshop — Peace Literacy in the Classroom: Healing Trauma, Navigating Technology, and Protecting Humanity’s Future — will be held 2-6 p.m. Sunday, July 19, with follow up meetings 7-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, July 23-Aug. 6. (all times are EDT).

The second workshop — Leadership Skills for Surviving the 21st Century — will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, with follow up meetings 7-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 13-27. (all times are EDT).

Both are designed to help refine and strengthen the skills needed to bring anti-racism, peace, and trauma care work to homes, workplaces, classrooms and communities. It is truly relevant work for today’s world.

Areas of learning will include:

• Learning about building resilient communities through non-violence

• Identifying our human needs and the tangles of trauma

• Understanding the anatomy of aggression and the fuels of racism

• Resolving conflict and learning the power of respect and calm

• Understanding emerging technologies in terms of non-physical needs and trauma
