When writer John Ridley was approached by DC Comics to write The Other History of the DC Universe for their Black Label imprint, he initially thought that it was an imprint created for him.
"When we started this almost three years ago, Black Label was new. I'll be honest, and I'm only half-joking, when we sat down to talk about The Other History of the DC Universe, at the time it was Jim [Lee] and Dan [DiDio], and they said, 'Oh, we really like this idea. We want to find the right format for it.' And they came back and said, 'Yeah, we got this thing, we're gonna do Black Label,'" Ridley told CBR during a conference call. "And I was like, 'Oh, wow, they're giving me my own label. It's for, you know, the black guy.' And then they explained, 'No, it's just premium black, you know, the best that it can be.'"
Ridley also said that Lee and Didio came up with the concept and the format for Black Label at the same time. "It was a concept and a format and they both arrived simultaneously. Obviously, this is coming out a lot later now, and DC has had an opportunity to work with Black Label, but it was like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; and it's chocolate and peanut butter," he said. "If you're old enough to remember the old commercials, they trip into each other and they said, 'Oh, this is a great thing.' So it was more of an accidental arrival than a sharply planned thing where 'This kind of a story can only work in this format.'"
DC's Black Label features prestige miniseries with special binding and more adult themes from a wide range of creators, which includes original stories as well as reprints of books that were previously published under different imprints. Previous installments in the series include Batman: Last Knight on Earth by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo and Superman: Earth One by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.
The Other History of the DC Universe features the events of DC canon mixed with real-world events, filtered through the perspective of heroes such as Black Lightning and Katana. Ridley, who is also known for his work as an award-winning screenwriter (12 Years a Slave) and producer (American Crime), is also writing The Next Batman for DC's Future State initiative.
The Next Batman is written by Ridley and illustrated by Nick Derrington. Its first issue will debut in January 2021 from DC.
