SUN STAFF REPORT

For the first time since the Clark County Health Department began issuing daily reports on the local COVID-19 incidence rate in accordinance with state color-coded guidelines, the county’s infections have fallen into the yellow category, meaning there are no more than one to 10 cases of the virus per 100,000 people.

For most of the past year, the county had been in the red or critical category, meaning there were more than 25 cases per 100,000 over a seven-day period. And in recent weeks, infections had been in the accelerated spread, or orange zone, or 10-25 cases per 100,000.

On Wednesday, Clark County had only 9.06 per 100,000, the lowest rate it has had since the Health Department started issuing the incidence reports Oct. 28.

There were only two new cases reported Wednesday, and there were 77 active cases overall. Clark County has had 2,614 confirmed coronavirus cases and 22 deaths related to the illness.

On Tuesday, there was one new case, and the rate was 12.6. Over the three-day period of March 27-29, there were 11 new cases and the rate was 15.36.

Across Kentucky, infections have been plunging while they have risen in surrounding states.

“We are on a positive trajectory – we are leading all of our seven border states in administering at least one dose of the vaccine and our positivity rate continues to decline – but we need to keep working hard and not give up,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a press conference Tuesday.

Kentucky has now vaccinated about 40% of all adults.
