At the clinic getting vaccinated for COVID-19 recently, a friend said she was surprised to see me there. After hearing I had gotten vaccinated, another friend expressed similar surprise. Their surprise comes from the fact that I’ve waited to have my children vaccinated until well after they were newborns.
I have never been a fervent or even mild anti-vaxxer. I understand and have stated publicly that I believe, as science has proven, that vaccines are incredibly safe. I’ve never opposed vaccination. However, I do believe many families have struggled with the aftermath of adverse vaccine reactions. Acknowledging that fact does not make me an anti-vaxxer. Though, delaying vaccination has gotten me judgmentally placed in that box.
This is the primary obstacle to any real progress in this debate. When people express any hesitation to vaccination, for whatever reason, they are placed into the anti-vaxxer camp. This stifles any authentic conversations or ability for either side to communicate and understand each other. And that is truly unfortunate.
