DUNEDIN, Fla. — The Yankees are having double trouble.

Their 14 double plays are tied for the most in Major League Baseball with the Padres. It’s the Yankees’ most double plays through their first 11 games since 1995, when they also had 14.

They added a whopping three more in an ugly 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark on Tuesday night.

How frustrated was manager Aaron Boone?

“Well, if we’re banging, not very,” he said. “Overall, we’ve pitched really well, and once we get it rolling offensively — you’re going to hit into your share of double plays, especially with our team. We’re not the fastest as a group, necessarily, and we have a lot of guys that hit the ball hard. That’s going to come with it. And even when we’re rolling, we’re going to hit into our share of double plays. I just want us to start grinding pitchers down. That’s when we’re at our best and that’s what we haven’t quite done yet.”

Leadoff man DJ LeMahieu was leading the team with three double plays. He only grounded into three in 50 games last season.

He didn’t produce any on Tuesday.

But Giancarlo Stanton grounded into a double play with LeMahieu on base in the second at-bat of the game. Then newcomer Rougned Odor grounded into a pair, including one with runners on second and third with no outs that scored the team’s first run in the seventh inning.

“Double plays are just one of those things where you just want to keep being aggressive,” LeMahieu said. “You don’t want to sit up there at the plate and say I can’t ground into a double play because you’re probably going to end up doing it. We just need to stay aggressive and probably just swing at better pitches, have a little bit better plate discipline. I’m sure that’s probably a big reason. We’re fine. I’m not worried about it at all.”
