A new record label and music publishing company inspired by late Levittown guitarist Danny DeGennaro will keep the artist’s memory alive and support local musicians.

The nonprofit Danny DeGennaro Foundation has launched DDF JAM Publishing LLC and Danny DeGennaro Foundation Record Label to share the late artists’s catalog of music and record, release, and promote songs of past Danny DeGennaro Foundation scholarship award winners.

The record label and music publishing company has been in development for two years. Those involved has been establishing distribution channels for the music and will be releasing tunes through CD Baby, with downloads and streaming available on Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon Music, according to Danny DeGennaro Foundation member Ed Mero.

John Austin Mulhern, a longtime partner of the Danny DeGennaro Foundation, will serve as president of the newly formed publishing company.

John Chaykin, a longtime DeGennaro friend and music collaborator, will lead the record label’s talent search as A&R director. He is an established local professional musician.

The record label and publishing company will assist with artist development and keeping intellectual property rights that are protected through Artist Rights Society with royalties paid through BMI or ASCAP.

The creation of the record label and music publishing company will benefit by expanding the reach of the music and allow songs by local artists to be considered for films.

“They don’t even want to talk to the artists,” Mero said. “You have to already be signed up or have a structure set up to be able to pitch your song.”

Mulhern will offer songwriting workshops, career guidance, booking and management, contract review, negotiations, and copyrighting material.

Past Danny DeGennaro Foundation scholarship winner Katelyn Cryan, Bucks County singer/songwriter Cara Cartney, and Bucks hip-hop artist Kenny “KB” Brown have recorded songs, the organization said.

New music is being laid down at Perkasie-based recording studio Sonlight Productions LLC. The Danny DeGennaro Foundation has previously recorded at the studio with past scholarship award winners.

The record label is working with 15 to 20 Bucks County artists and plans to grow that roster.

The record label is planning for 1 million music streams and more growth.

Funds raised through DDF JAM Publishing LLC will be donated to the Danny DeGennaro Foundation.

“The market’s changed,” Mero said. “The reality of it is you have as much clout as a major label if you do it correctly.”

Chaykin, the A&R director, said he is looking at qualities he saw in DeGennaro in new artists.

“I try to see ‘would this sell?’ Would people be interested?” Chaykin said. “There’s also the look. That’s a big part of it. Do they have stage presence?”

Chaykin, a drummer, met DeGennaro when he was a teenager and the two ended up playing together over the years.

“He’s got the type of music that has staying power,” Chaykin said, comparing DeGennaro to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eric Clapton. “His music never dies. It’ll always be listenable and great.”

DeGennaro, 56, a beloved performer, was murdered in December 2011 inside his home in Bristol Township’s Levittown section. Several people were convicted in the case.
