University of Northern Colorado officials on Wednesday announced their statement indicating a student was assaulted in a possible hate crime was premature.
On Tuesday afternoon, when Greeley police issued a news release indicating the initial investigation did not indicate the assault was a hate crime, UNC President Andy Feinstein, Chief of Staff Dan Maxey and UNC Police Chief Dennis Pumphrey met with Greeley police leadership to discuss the incident.
“UNC was premature in definitively labeling this incident a hate crime,” university officials said in a Wednesday update. “This case falls within the jurisdiction of the Greeley Police Department, and their investigation is in its early stages. We remain supportive of the Greeley Police Department’s work, and we are confident that they will investigate the case fully.”
About 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Greeley police responded to a hospital on a report of a prior altercation. The victim said he was assaulted while attending a party Friday afternoon in the 1700 block of 8th Avenue, according to a department news release. He did not sustain serious injuries.

Police have not provided an update since Tuesday’s news release, which noted the motive for the assault was unknown and the investigation was in the preliminary stages.
“All elements of the incident will be investigated, including whether the incident meets the statutory requirements of a bias-motivated crime,” police said in the release.
University officials initially stated the report they received strongly suggested the victim was targeted due to skin color. Officials did not say what about the report led them to believe it was a hate crime. A spokeswoman said no interviews or further information will be released from the university as Greeley police handle the ongoing case.
