TAUNTON - Taunton remained in the yellow - or moderate risk - category, according to data released by the state on Wednesday.

The city is reporting 1,059 total cases of COVID-19. It has had 52 cases in the past 14 days, and has an average daily incidence rate of 6.5 and a test positivity rate of 2.51%. To compare, New Bedford, also rated yellow, has had 2,295 total cases. It has had 62 cases in the past 14 days, and has an average daily incidence rate of 4.4 and a test positivity rate of 2.33%. Fall River, in the high risk or red category, is reporting 1,855 total cases of COVID-19, and 119 fatalities. It has had 104 cases in the past 14 days, and has an average daily incidence rate of 8.3 and a test positivity rate of 3.31%

On Tuesday, the state unveiiled a new, color-coded map that uses public health data to indicate the average daily case rate per 100,000 residents for all 351 Massachusetts cities and towns over the last two weeks. Each city or town has been designated as a higher risk, moderate risk, or lower risk community and is colored red, yellow, green or white on the map.

"Red, obviously, indicates municipalities that have more than eight cases of COVID per 100,000 people, and this is based on a national and global public health standard that is extremely high risk for COVID infection," Baker said Tuesday. City or towns designated higher risk are considered to have a high level of COVID infection, and will receive additional support from a COVID-19 enforcement team to address the spread of the virus.

Town by town data was released Wednesday.

Berkley - 77 total cases, less than 5 cases in the last 14 days (white), average daily incidence rate of less than 5, test positivity rate of 2.8%

Dighton - 68 total cases, zero cases in the last 14 days (white), average daily incidence rate of zero, test positivity rate of 0.58%

Raynham - 246 total cases, less than 5 cases in the last 14 days (white), average daily incidence rate of less than 5, test positivity rate of 1%

State health officials said their daily report has been streamlined to highlight the particular data points most useful to track the daily impact of the virus. Data points that were useful in earlier stages of the pandemic, but have been deemed less meaningful on a day-to-day basis, have been consolidated to the weekly report.

Statewide, the seven day weighted average test positivity rate is 1.5%. The report notes that this is the lowest the rate has been since it's been tracked.

The three day average hospitalizations was 396; the lowest it's been is 359.

The three day average deaths was 12; the lowest it's been is 11.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported an additional 229 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 113,198.

State health officials also confirmed 18 new COVID-19-related deaths across Massachusetts, bringing the state's confirmed coronavirus death toll to 8,547.

The DPH also reported Wednesday that 100,486 people in the state have recovered from COVID-19.

As of Aug. 12, weekly data shows that an additional 1,465 patients have been released from isolation, meaning they are considered to have recovered from the virus. Last week, state health officials said 99,021 patients had recovered from COVID-19.

As of Wednesday, 422 patients with the coronavirus were hospitalized in Massachusetts, an increase of 35 patients from what state reported Tuesday. Of those patients who are currently hospitalized, 64 were reported to be in an intensive care unit and 33 were intubated. Just one week ago these numbers were lower, with 396 hospitalized, 57 in the ICU and 21 intubated. A month ago, however, they were higher, with 583 hospitalized, 93 in the ICU and 43 intubated.

Case loads at hospitals in the region continue to be low. Morton reported zero patients, Charlton three, St. Luke's three and Saint Anne's one - and none of the patients were in the ICU.

It appears more younger people are testing positive, with apparently less deadly cases. The average age of total cases in the past 14 days is 39; for the entire pandemic, the average is 50. The average age of hospitalizations in the past 14 days is 59; over the course of the entire pandemic, it's 68. The average age of deaths over the past 14 days is 86; over the course of the entire pandemic it's 82.
