Mercer re-enters Orange category on County Alert System - WVVA TV

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) --The first day of school is in jeopardy in Mercer County.

Per WVDHHR's County Alert System, Mercer County has again moved into the orange category, with an average rate of 10.45 cases per 100,000 people.

The West Virginia Department of Education's Re-Entry Metrics state that counties in the orange or red categories ahead of the first day of school on September 8th will not be permitted to return to in-person instruction.

Each county will be evaluated on Saturday nights at 9 p.m. to determine if schools in that county can open for that week. This will also determine the level of athletic and extracurricular activities that are permitted.

If Mercer County remains in the orange and has to begin the year virtually, the Board of Education has set up times for students to pick up devices for school work. You can view that plan by clicking here.

Counties that go into the orange category after the first day of school can still provide in-person instruction with increased mitigation efforts.
