His style is tailored and timeless, though not to the point of being uptight or uncomfortable. He’s well-traveled and fashionably prompt, but has no problem embracing a spontaneous plan or change of heart. Meet William Gray, the fictional protagonist behind Meyer Davis’s debut product label of the same name. “Creating a character allowed us to go with different ideas, which we often do for different projects,” explains William Meyer, who founded his boutique design firm with Gray Davis in 1999. “It forced Gray and me to look back at our past and think about where we started and where we are now. I look at it as this gift of creative freedom to ourselves, a vessel and a narrative to carry that on, which is the William Gray collection.”

Marked with citron yellow initials, the William Gray label debuts with 60 products—some introductions from the firm’s archive of custom designs for projects, others relaunches of existing collaborations. A puzzle-piece collection, if you will, each item of furniture, light piece, and bath fixture reflects aspects of the firm’s residential and hospitality projects over the years. “The fact that we’ve been able to maintain this thread that ties all of our work together over so many types of projects is unique in our industry,” says Meyer.

The launch of the label, originally scheduled to take place at Salone del Mobile, is tied to another milestone for Meyer Davis: its 20th anniversary. Several years into cutting their teeth at top-echelon firms—Meyer at Gwathmey Siegel and Davis at John Saladino—the Nashville natives joined forces per the recommendation of a former professor at Auburn, their alma mater.

The firm’s first design projects, the V Bar at the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and a country farmhouse in Upstate New York, established the balance of endearingly urbane public and private interiors for which Meyer Davis’s portfolio would come to be known. Twenty years in, the firm has nearly 100 employees spread across offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London. Meyer Davis has pinpointed the look of tailored, contemporary design that’s simultaneously warm and welcoming, making it no wonder why the firm is often tapped to design high-end hospitality venues. (W Hotels, Four Seasons, Rosewood Hotels, Auberge Beach Residences, and 1 Hotel are all clients.)
