WEST VIRGINIA (WVVA) -- The West Virginia Department of Education's Re-Entry Metric has been tweaked, according to Governor Jim Justice.
In his Friday press briefing, Justice announced changes to guidelines within the 'orange' category of the metric.
Previously, counties in the Orange category prior to the first day of school could not return to the classroom. Counties that entered orange after the first day of school could continue in-person instruction with increased mitigation efforts - such as halting assemblies or large group activities, and requiring masks for students grade 3 and up at all times.
With the change, counties in the Orange category during the WVDE's Saturday update will resort to remote learning for that week.
"We've got to have a cutoff period," Justice said. "From the standpoint of orange, it doesn't just put us on high alert like red would. We don't shut it down that day, but we use the same guideline on Saturday night for the following week. So if we're orange on Saturday night, we're out of school for the next week. That's all there is to that."
Justice said the change is the result of a significant increase in the state's percent of daily positive cases this week.
"Every day, all through the night, all day - I'm looking at these numbers," he said. "If you look at just what is going on within these counties - and we're growing more and more orange counties now - the real truth is we have got to do something now. If we don't do it now - this is pay me now or pay me later - we're gonna end up with 30 counties in the orange, and then attacking this problem is gonna be really, really, really hard."
Justice added that official guidelines are expected to be released this evening.
The next WVDE update will be made available Saturday at 5 PM.
