Alabama QB Mac Jones not offended by 'game manager' label - 247Sports

First, it was Auburn quarterback Bo Nix, who ended up in the background of an Alabama game poster following a 42-13 Crimson Tide win. The latest person to label quarterback Mac Jones as a game manager was Florida head coach Dan Mullen during a Sunday teleconference.

“I think he’s a guy that has had a great year, very similar to Kyle (Trask),” Mullen said of Jones. “He does a great job managing their offense, distributing the ball to all the different playmakers, getting them in the right place at the right time, taking what the defense gives him and has had a great season.”

The first time it happened, Jones’ teammates used it as motivation in the Iron Bowl. Star wide receiver DeVonta Smith didn’t hesitate in forwarding Nix’s comments to his quarterback.

“It was just funny just seeing that,” Smith said after the rivalry game. “But I mean, at the end of the day, people are gonna talk, they’re gonna do what they want. At the end of the day, we’re just gonna show up, execute the game plan and do what we’ve gotta do.”

One day after Mullen’s quote on the SEC Championship Game coaches teleconference, Jones was asked if he, himself, is at all bothered by being called a game manager by others.

“Nothing is really offensive (about it),” Jones said Monday. “Coach Saban would probably say the same thing about me. I mean, I try and manage the game. It’s kind of my job to do that. Obviously, I have a lot of great players around me, so that’s my job, to just get them the ball and try and hold onto the ball and not give the other team the ball.

“There’s a lot of really good players on my team that make me look a lot better than I am. I think that’s probably a good, accurate description of what type of quarterback I am.”

Jones has led No. 1 Alabama to a perfect 10-0 record and a matchup with Florida in the SEC title game on Saturday, Dec. 19. During the regular season, Jones was efficient and effective in leading a top-five offense, throwing for 3,321 yards and 27 touchdowns on 217-of-284 passing. He leads the nation in yards per attempt (11.7) and passer rating (203.9) and ranks second in completion percentage, fourth in passing yards and fifth in passing touchdowns.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native will face his toughest challenge to date, however, in Atlanta in the conference title game against the Gators. The Florida defense leads the league with 31.0 sacks and is fifth in scoring defense (26.3 ppg) and sixth in passing defense (242.3 ypg).

“This is why players come to Alabama and players go to Florida is to play in games like this,” he said. “We’re just really looking forward to going against a really good team this weekend.”
