Twitter now labels President Donald Trump’s election fraud claims as misleading, calls out Joe Biden as the president-elect. In the past month, the social platform labeled Trump’s election fraud content as “disputed.”
The new label started to pop up on Twitter on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 19 and reads, “election officials have certified Joe Biden as the winner of the US Presidential election.”
“Following certification of the results of the 2020 US Presidential Election, we’ve updated our label to reflect thee latest information,” Nick Pacilio, a spokesperson for Twitter, told CNN.
Twitter claimed to have labeled 300,000 tweets as misleading last month, but as CNN reports, Democrats have criticized social platforms for not doing enough in stopping or correcting the spread of misinformation about the election results.
Alex Howard, a democratic governance advocate and director of the Digital Democracy Project at the Demand Progress Educational Fund, called out Twitter for simply putting Trump’s claims are “disputed” rather than labeling his claims as false, as CNN reports.
“They’re trying to create a both-sides dynamic when false equivalence misleads people,” Howard told CNN.
The electoral college certified Biden’s win on Monday, Dec. 14. Hence, the new label flat out disputes Trump’s claims about election fraud, declaring Biden as the president-elect.
