The 2021 Billboard Music Awards were handed out on Sunday night, May 23, during a live ceremony hosted by Nick Jonas. So who were the big winners? Scroll down for the complete list of BBMAs champs in all 51 categories, 42 of which were announced the morning of the ceremony with the remaining 9 saved for the prime time broadcast.
Like the MTV Video Music Awards and the American Music Awards, the BBMAs are a popularity contest, but apart from two categories (Top Social Artist and Top Collaboration) they weren’t voted on by fans online. Instead, Billboard decided nominees and winners using the same metrics that determine the weekly Billboard charts: record sales, track sales, online streams, radio airplay, and social engagement.
The Weeknd came in with 16 nominations, more than any other artist, and for good reason. He had a landmark year on the charts with his album “After Hours” topping the Billboard 200 and his single “Blinding Lights” achieving unprecedented success on the Hot 100: it’s the only song ever to spend a year or more in the top 10, and it also spent more weeks in the top five than any other song in history.
Unsurprisingly, The Weeknd was one of the nominees for Top Artist, along with Taylor Swift, Drake, and two posthumous nominees: Juice WRLD died in December 2019 when he was only 21, and Pop Smoke was murdered in February 2020 at the age of 20, but both released massively successful albums following their deaths. Juice WRLD’s “Legends Never Die” and Pop Smoke’s “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” are both still in the top 15 on the Billboard 200 almost a year after they dropped.
