For weeks, the number of communities in the highest category of Covid-19 case growth has tanked, according to the Department of Health.
Only three communities in the state — Westfield, Averill and Brunswick — have more than 80 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks. Each has a population of less than 1,000. Averill, an unincorporated township in the Northeast Kingdom, counted just 24 residents as of the 2010 census.
Also encouraging is the increasing number of communities in the lowest category of case growth, with fewer than one recent case per 100,000 residents. Those include broad swaths of Addison County, Washington County, Essex County and southern Vermont.
For context, The New York Times’ risk factor scale puts that rate at “low risk” for most counties. But an individual’s risk can also vary by their vaccination status, their health and the activities they do.
Another positive sign is that no new communities have been added to the data in weeks. The Department of Health reports exact data for any community with six or more cases. Right now, that applies to 215 communities, a number that has stayed level since April 28.
