Delaware continues to see an increase of Covid-19 cases, with the state now listed as a riskier area by Covid Act Now dashboard. and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The sharp decline in Covid-19 cases over the winter has plateaued nationwide, with Delaware seeing a bigger uptick in cases than many states. Delaware’s Covid-19 dashboard and Covid Act Now (see below) showed New Castle County posting the biggest increase.
According to the Sunday report from the Delaware Division of Public Health, 338 new positive cases were reported.
The higher figures come after an outbreak involving the University of Delaware community that amounted to about 600 cases. Case numbers have since dropped.
Public health experts say an increase in cases after a sharp drop often precedes a surge.
No hotspots have been reported. Instead, an elevated number of cases have been reported in New Castle County zip codes that include the University of Delaware area, Hockessin-Greenville, New Castle and Middletown.
The average number of Delaware cases rose in March after new daily cases appeared to be moving below the 200 mark. While case totals remains low when compared to the winter surge, the trend will be closely watched.
During the winter surge, Delaware saw an average of 700 or more daily cases.
Concern has been growing after an outbreak of cases in Europeand Brazil.Contributing to the outbreaks are faster spreading variants from the UK, Brazil, and South Africa Vaccinations in the U.S. could hold down the severity of an outbreak among the elderly, the group most vulnerable to the virus. The rollout of vaccines has sputtered in several European nations.

In the Sunday report, three deaths deaths were reported, all from a review of Vital Statistics records from the first two months of the year.
The deaths involved two individuals from Kent County and 1 from New Castle County. Those who died ranged in age from their 60s to their 90s and one was a resident of a long-term care facility. Their deaths increased Delaware’s total number of Covid-related deaths to 1,529.
Other information:
• 16 new hospital admissions (down 14 from the previous day).
• 1,340 people who tested negative, bringing the total to 558,652.
• 373,087 vaccine doses administered (up 6,731 from the previous day).
