There are about 3.7 million Arab Americans who are unable to self-identify as such on the U.S. Census, which creates problems when collecting information about the demographic.
On this episode of The Year 2042: an MLive podcast, hosts Dana Afana and Bob Johnson speak with Madiha Tariq, deputy director of Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS); Rima Meroueh, director of the National Network for Arab American Communities, which is a national institution of ACCESS; and State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud.
Arab Americans and others with roots in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have pushed for years for a category to identify themselves for the U.S. Census
“MENA communities, Middle Eastern North African communities, are distinctly different from the white community, especially in metro Detroit on education, poverty, housing, all kinds of social indicators, which makes the case for us to have a separate category collection,” Tariq said.
The current option for Arab Americans and the MENA demographic is to choose “white” on the census.
