Pete Docter Sets Animated Feature Category Record With 'Soul' Nomination - Hollywood Reporter

Docter earned his fourth animated feature category nom as a director for the jazz-infused movie, while 'Wolfwalkers' helmer Tomm Moore collected his third nom.

Soul director Pete Docter earned his fourth nomination for best animated feature, a record for the category, which was first awarded in 2002.

He won the category twice, for Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015), and was additionally nominated for 2001's Monsters, Inc. in the category's debut year. Docter has nine Oscar nominations in total, also having earned screenplay noms for Toy Story, Wall-E, Up and Inside Out. He was nominated in the animated short category for Mike’s New Car.

This is the second Oscars nomination for Soul producer Dana Murray, who was previously nominated for the 2017 animated short Lou. Soul received two additional nominations on Monday, for its score by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste and sound for nominees Ren Klyce, Coya Elliott and David Parker.

Meanwhile Pixar — whose accolades have included 10 best animated feature Oscars — earned a second best animated feature nom this year for Onward, for director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae, and an animated short nom for Burrow, helmed by Madeline Sharafian and produced by Michael Capbarat.

"Cheers all around," said Docter of the nominations of the Pixar titles. He added, "Personally, it's an acknowledgment that what we were doing is speaking to people. I also feel like it's our mission to try things that haven't been tried before and still connect with our audience. It's really gratifying."

Meanwhile, Wolfwalkers helmer Tomm Moore — nominated with his fellow director Ross Stewart and producers Paul Young and Stéphan Roelants — earned his third animated feature category nomination. Moore's previous two films in his Irish folklore trilogy, The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2015), were also Academy Award-nominated.

Wolfwalkers is the first animated feature nom for Apple TV+, the 12th for GKIDS, and the fourth category nom for Ireland's Cartoon Saloon.

Made for just $12 million, Wolfwalkers is a hand-drawn fantasy feature inspired by history and Irish folklore. In a released statement on Monday, Moore and Stewart said on behalf of the filmmaking team they were "hugely grateful and happy" for the nomination and called Wolfwalkers "a love letter to hand-drawn animation and its timeless potential, to nature and our shared biosphere and to our home here in Ireland, its history and culture, its folklore and its people."

“[Wolfwalkers' theme] of empathy and the ability for people to see past their differences, I think are really important," Moore told THR on Monday, adding that he hopes more people will see the movie and respond to its message. Of its hand-drawn approach, he noted, "We're  really happy to be a part of the resurgence of the art form."

Also nominated for best animated feature is Netflix original Over the Moon, helmed by Glen Keane and produced by Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou. Disney legend Keane — the animator behind characters such as Beast in Disney's 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast — previously won an Oscar for animated short Dear Basketball, which he shared with Kobe Bryant.

Rounding out the animated feature category is Aardman Animations' stop-motion A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (available on Netflix in the U.S.), which delivered the first Oscar nominations to directors Richard Phelan and Will Becher and producer Paul Kewley. Aardman's original Shaun the Sheep Movie was Oscar-nominated in 2016. The U.K. studio's Oscar history includes a best animated feature Oscar, for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit; and Academy Awards for animated shorts Creature Comforts, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave.

There had been some speculation that animation could have cracked the best picture category this year, but that rare distinction remains bestowed on just three movies: Beauty and the Beast and, more recently, Pixar's Toy Story 3 and the Docter-directed Up.
