The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in Leominster has reached triple digits for the first time since the July 4 weekend.

As of Friday morning, there are 119 COVID cases in progress in the city, according to figures announced by Mayor Dean Mazzarella during his daily update on social media and the city-owned radio station. The number stood at 48 on Oct. 22.

The last time Leominster’s case count stood at triple digits was July 5, when there were 101 cases.

Also, 774 cases are no longer on the active list, a number that has increased by 12 since Oct. 22. That consists of people who are no longer in quarantine because they have not shown symptoms for at least seven days.

Green, yellow and red

The larger number of positive cases means Leominster’s average daily transmission rate now stands at 17.07 per 100,000 residents — far above the 2.82 announced on Sept. 26.

The state Department of Public Health considers communities with an average daily transmission rate of less than 4 per 100,000 residents, or that has had fewer than five cases, over the previous two weeks to be low-risk, or in the “green” or “white” category, respectively.

Communities with an average daily transmission rate of 4-8 per 100,000 residents are considered medium risk, in the “yellow” category, and communities above 8 are considered high risk.

Leominster and 120 other communities are in the “red” category — nearly one-third of the state’s 351 cities and towns.

Even with Leominster moving into the “red” category, Mazzarella said Friday morning that Halloween trick-or-treating is still on for Saturday night from 6-8.

Hospital cases

As of Thursday, UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital's Leominster campus reported eight suspected or confirmed COVID cases, with none in intensive care. That is according to figures from the state Department of Public Health.

Finally, according to DPH figures released Thursday, fewer than five people whose primary residence is in Leominster died from COVID in the months of July, August and September. The last reported death was on Oct. 13.

Testing locations

A drive-through COVID testing center is available at HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital's Leominster campus weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A doctor's order should be filed with the hospital lab before a test is performed. All patients must call (978) 466-2627 to register before getting in line.

Testing centers are also available at the Reliant Medical Group facility on New Lancaster Road (Route 117), for Reliant patients only, and at the CVS Pharmacy stores at 246 Mill St. in Leominster and 454 Electric Ave. (Route 13) in Lunenburg by appointment.

In Fitchburg, COVID testing is available at Community Health Connection's ACTION Community Health Center at 130 Water St. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Follow the signs for testing, and bring a photo ID and an insurance card. For more information, call (978) 878-8100.
