It’s no surprise that these days nearly everyone in the Trump White House is focused on winning the presidential election, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is no exception. Except that, if recent reports are to be believed, the presidential election Secretary Pompeo is devoting his energy and attention to winning is the 2024 race, and he wants to win it himself.
That’s the conclusion Ana and Nando draw in this clip, describing as purely political a move Pompeo’s State Department is considering - specifically, to label groups like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam as anti-semitic for ostensibly supporting the BDS (Boycott, Divest and Sanction) movement in its efforts to bring attention to and change Israeli policy in the occupied West Bank. While Ana says Pompeo is clearly seeking to curry favor with the pro-Israel lobby, in particular evangelical Christians who line up solidly behind the right-wing Israeli government, Nando points out that these human rights groups are all relatively mainstream, and the fact that Pompeo can plausibly (to his base) accuse them of anti-semitism merely underscores how far right the debate over Israel has shifted in the United States during the past ten years.
Ana also notes the silence about this attack on free speech from the free speech warriors on the right who always leap immediately to the defense of anyone accused of racism, sexism or homophobia. So where are they on Mike Pompeo declaring Amnesty International officially anti-semitic? “I guess we're the free speech conservatives now,” she says.
