Anthony Chen's drama tells the story of a socially isolated high-school teacher who forges a romantic relationship with a student.

Singapore has picked Anthony Chen's slowburn romantic drama Wet Season as its entry for the best international feature film category at the 2021 Oscars.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and later screened at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Festival, where its star, Yeo Yann Yann, won the best actress award.

The selection marks the second time that Singapore has put Chen forward for the Oscar's international category. His 2013 feature, Ilo Ilo, which won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, was selected but not nominated.

Wet Season stars Yeo as an isolated 40ish high school teacher who forges a delicate romantic relationship with one of her students, played by Koh Jia Ler.

The selection was announced Tuesday by the Singapore Film Commission (SFC).

“It is a thought-provoking film which explores human relationships and emotions through the lens of a central female character grappling with her personal identity and marriage," said SFC director Joachim Ng in a statement. "The film has been well received by audiences in several film festivals and we are proud to continue supporting more made-with-Singapore films that transcend boundaries and evoke conversations,” he added.

The film was produced by Chen's banner Giraffe Pictures in association with streaming platform Hooq, which has since dissolved, and Chinese outfit Rediance. International sales are handled by Memento Films.

Singapore has submitted features for Oscars consideration since 2005, but the country has yet to score a nomination.
