Christian Vazquez tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh, then connected for a two-run, opposite-field single to give the Red Sox a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning Wednesday.

He helped the Red Sox win 6-5 over the Mets at Citi Field.

Vazquez is 6-for-15 (.400) with two home runs and five RBIs so far this season. He certainly has developed into quite an offensive force after always being known for his defense, especially his strong arm. Last year, he batted .276 with a .320 on-base percentage, .477 slugging percentage, .798 OPS, 23 home runs, 26 doubles, one triple and 72 RBIs in 138 games.

“As a catcher, he’s really got to be up there at the top at what they do and the offensive part,” Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. “I know (Buster) Posey has always been one of those guys and (J.T.) Realmuto is one of those guys. And it used to be (Yadier) Molina. So Vazquez has put himself in a category with the best catchers. Defensively we know he does a good job. Offensively, last year, I thought he really stepped it up, showed us what he can do and he’s looking right now like he’s going to be that type of player again.

“So great for him,” Roenicke added. “He works hard. I know he wants to be out there every day. He’s not happy when I give him a day off. But it’s really good to see when guys work hard and it shows up in their game.”

Reliever Seth Lugo hung an 80.4 mph curveball that Vazquez blasted 396 feet to left field for his second homer of the season. He connected on a 92.3 mph cutter from reliever Justin Wilson in the eighth for his two-run opposite field single.

“The homer, I saw that curveball very good,” Vazquez said. “I saw it and I know he likes to spin the ball, Lugo. But with Wilson, I’ve faced him a couple times before and I know he likes to throw that cutter in. I think I got a good swing — late swing — and I got the base hit with two RBIs so that feels good.”
