Hurricane Douglas effects could be felt as early as Saturday night, including heavy rain and wind, on Maui with hurricane watches and tropical storm warnings up for the county, the National Weather Service said in its 5 p.m. Saturday update.

Douglas has weakened to a Category 1 storm since morning with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. The hurricane was 335 east southeast of Kahului and 305 miles east southeast of Hana and moving west northwest at 14 mph, a little slower than earlier in the day.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 35 miles from the

center and tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 115 miles.

The system is forecast to weaken as it moves over cooler waters and buffeted by vertical wind shear, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. On its current forecast track, Douglas’ center will move near or over the islands as a weakened hurricane or strong tropical storm Sunday.

A forecast track has Douglas passing near or over Maui island Sunday afternoon with tropical storm level winds in the morning. Maximum wind speeds still are expected to be in the 75 to 80 mph range.

Based on this forecast, the National Weather Service posted a Tropical Storm Warning for Hawaii and Maui Counties. This means that tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours.

Other warnings and advisories include:

A high surf warning for east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai through 6 a.m. Monday. Douglas will produce a large swell with large breaking waves of 15 to 25 feet by late Saturday or Sunday. Combined with higher than predicted ocean levels, surf and storm surge significant beach erosion and flooding of low lying roads are possible.

Flash flood watch will be in effect from Sunday to Monday morning. Rainfall accumulations could be 5 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts to 15 inches.

Since the last update, the National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for Oahu.

County officials are urging people to shelter in place if safe, due to COVID-19, but as a last resort these shelters will be open at 7 p.m. Saturday:

– Maui High School (pet friendly).

– South Maui Community Park Gym (pet friendly).

– King Kekaulike High School (pet friendly).

– Lahaina Intermediate School.

– Hana High School

Two other shelters are tentatively set to open at 7 a.m. Sunday:

– Lanai High School (pet friendly).

– Molokai High School.

Emergency shelters, run by the American Red Cross, provide space only. Residents seeking shelter must bring anything they need, including food, water, medicine, face masks, hand sanitizer and blankets. Pets will need to be in a hard case kennel; owners need to bring pet food and supplies.

People seeking shelter will be required to wear face masks and will undergo a health screening, including temperature checks, before entering the shelter.

Those who show possible COVID-19 symptoms will be placed in a separate section of the shelter, county officials have said.

There are closures and announcements about operations:

– Hawaiian Airlines is canceling all flights between Hawaii and the Mainland, including service to and from Los Angeles, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle on Sunday. The airline also canceled its Neighbor Island service Sunday and is providing fliers flexibility to change flights without fees. For more information and updates, visit https://ift.tt/3hBoPOV.
