Hurricane warnings have been lifted for Oahu and Maui County as Douglas passed northwest of the islands toward Kauai around 11 p.m. Sunday.

The hurricane had strengthened slightly from 85 to 90 mph and was still moving west-northwest at a 16 mph clip.

It was located 100 miles northwest of Honolulu and 50 miles northeast of Lihue.

Douglas, which was expected to bring a “triple threat” of strong winds, high surf and heavy ran, largely spared Maui County on Sunday. Residents in Hana, where the storm was on track to hit first, said they experienced some rain and wind in the morning but that conditions cleared up by early afternoon.

Most of the rain fell on the West Maui Mountains, where the Puu Kukui gauge recorded the most rain throughout the county with 5.14 inches over a 24-hour period ending at 5 p.m. Sunday. Pukalani recorded 2.01 inches, while the West Wailuaiki gauge in East Maui recorded 1.94 inches.

On Molokai, the island’s Molokai 1 gauge reported 2.84 inches of rain, followed by the Puu Alii gauge at 2.07 inches. The state Department of Transportation posted a video on social media at around 3 p.m. showing the flooded roadway at Kamalo Dip (mile marker 10.5) and asking residents to avoid the area.

Mayor Michael Victorino said around 6:30 p.m. Sunday that all emergency shelters had been closed with the hurricane warning lifted for Maui County. About 35 people used the seven shelters across the county.

Victorino said that no major damage had been reported, though there had been some reports of debris, fallen trees, downed telephone poles and downed power lines.

Power outages occurred across “pockets” of Maui County on Sunday affecting about 3,500 customers on Maui and Molokai, according to Hawaiian Electric spokeswoman Shayna Decker.

Around 5:35 a.m., about 3,000 customers in Wailuku and Waikapu lost power when a tree branch made contact with a line; by 6 a.m., they were all back online. Crews also restored power to pockets in Iao Valley, Haiku and Upcountry after tree branches were cleared from lines, Decker said.

On Molokai, about 260 people in Maunaloa experienced a momentary outage that was resolved around 10:50 a.m.

Five customers at the Haleakala summit were still without power Sunday evening, and Decker said that crews planned to assess the damage Monday when visibility was better.

Victorino also said that county offices will open Monday and that county transportation services will also resume. The county-partnered, YMCA summer youth program will continue Monday at War Memorial Gym and Eddie Tam Gym. The South Maui Community Park Gym will remain closed for cleaning and sanitization, since it was used as an emergency shelter.

Other warnings and advisories include:

A high surf warning for east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai through 6 a.m. Monday. Douglas will produce a large swell with large breaking waves as big as 15 to 25 feet. Combined with higher than predicted ocean levels, surf and storm surge significant beach erosion and flooding of low lying roads are possible.

A flash flood watch is in effect from Sunday to Monday morning. Rainfall accumulations could be 5 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts to 15 inches.

There are closure and other operational announcements:

– Haleakala National Park closed Saturday until further notice. All sunrise reservations scheduled Sunday and Monday have been cancelled. Assessments will take place after the storm passes to determine when the park is safe again to reopen.

– County pools, parks and Waiehu Municipal Golf Course will be closed Monday.

– Central Maui Landfill and recycling centers will be closed Monday.

– There will be no residential trash pickup Monday.

– The Expeditions Ferry between Lahaina and Manele harbors will not be sailing Monday. The ferry hopes to resume operations Tuesday.
