The Chico Enterprise-Record received its most prestigious award to date in the California News Publishers Association’s 2020 California Journalism Awards competition Friday, earning second place in the General Excellence category for small newspapers.

It was the eighth award received by the E-R in this year’s competition, with four days of contest results still to be announced.

“This is the big one — if you place in the top five in General Excellence, it’s a monumental achievement for any newspaper,” said E-R editor Mike Wolcott.

The General Excellence category is, in effect, the “overall best newspaper” award presented by CNPA. It judges every aspect of the newspaper including quality of writing, depth of coverage, photography, editorial content, sports and page design.

“The part that means the most to me is, this was truly a team effort. Every single member of our staff gets the credit for this, for their incredible work during the most challenging circumstances imaginable this past year,” Wolcott said. “This again validates what I say every day — we’ve got an incredible group of talented and dedicated journalists that lets nothing get in the way of covering the news in our community. And we do it because we love what we do.”

First place in General Excellence went to the Santa Maria Times. A sister publication of the E-R, the Marin Independent Journal, placed fourth. The Marin newspaper is among the 12 daily newspapers designed by the NorCal Design Center, which is based at the Enterprise-Record office in Chico.

Judges praised the E-R for the quality of the content, Opinion page and design, and made special mention of former reporter/photographer Carin Dorghalli’s column on her family’s market in Berry Creek that was destroyed by fire. “The photographs were top-notch,” one judge said.

Following is the list of other awards won to date by the E-R in this year’s competition, which continues through Tuesday:

Election coverage: First place, Robin Epley, “A council divided, a city confused.”

Wildfire coverage: Second place, Sharon Martin, ““Memories of Camp Okizu.”

Photo essay: Second place, Carin Dorghalli, “A month up in flames.”

Column writing: Second place, Mike Wolcott, Editor’s Notes: “Happy Father’s Day to the Man by the Window” and “Packers or 49ers? The story behind that roadside ball.”

Column writing: Fourth place, Audria Ruscitti, Cabin Fever Cookbook: “Cucumber and tomato salad: A perfect barbecue side” and “COVID meatballs — a tasty — albeit dark — treat.”

Profile story: Fourth place, Will Denner, “Friends remember Stephen Vest, 30-year-old killed in Chico police shooting.”

Editorial writing: Fifth place, editorial board of Laura Urseny, Steve Schoonover and Mike Wolcott, “It’s time for a new mayor in Chico.”
