Zeta, which slammed ashore Oct. 28 in Cocodrie, has been upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane in a new post-storm analysis by the National Hurricane Center.

Top sustained winds reached 115 mph at landfall, the report says, 5 mph higher than immediate reports from the National Weather Service and others.

"These Category 3 sustained winds were likely experienced over only a very small area at and near the coast near the landfall location, and this change in the estimated landfall intensity is of little practical significance in terms of the impacts associated with the storm there," the report, released Monday, says.

After landfall, the highest sustained wind speed recorded near ground level, 94 mph, came from a public source at Golden Meadow at 4:39 p.m. Oct. 28. Gusts were recorded at 110 mph.

Storms reach Category 3 strength when sustained winds reach 111 mph. Officials and weather forecasters had noted at the time the storm's wind estimates were 1 mph below that.

Officials upgraded Zeta from Category 2 to 3 after analyzing readings from weather stations and other tools in the Gulf of Mexico and along the storm's path. Airplane weather readings were also adjusted to account for the storm's relatively quick forward motion of 23-25 mph as it approached land.

The report says sustained winds increased rapidly just before Zeta struck Cocodrie around 4 p.m. Oct. 28, noting a significant drop in the storm's central pressure.

Zeta killed five people across the southern U.S. and caused about $4.4 billion in property damage, including $1.25 million in Louisiana, the report says. At least 75 injuries were reported in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, with more than 70 of them in southern Mississippi.

Locally, the storm caused the most damage in Cocodrie and in south Lafourche, where officials said several dozen homes were destroyed or damaged. The most widespread impact for Terrebonne and Lafourche was power outages, affecting more than 35,000 homes and businesses immediately after the storm. Most outages were restored within a few days, longer in the hardest-hit areas.

Zeta's upgrade to Category 3 makes it the latest major storm to make landfall in the U.S., breaking a record set by a hurricane that hit Tampa on Oct. 25, 1921, the report says. It ties a record, with seven, for the most major hurricanes in an Atlantic season, set in 2005.

Forecasters say the six-month hurricane season that starts June 1 will be another busy one based on historical data and summer weather patterns. Colorado State University researcher Phil Klotzbach predicts 17 named tropical storms will form, eight of which will become hurricanes.
